Fuseboard Installation (Domestic & Commercial)
A fuse board (consumer unit) is the heart of your property’s electrical
system, controlling and distributing power safely throughout the property
Why upgrade your fuseboard?
- Safety – Older units often lack modern safetey features.
- Capacity – New circuits for EV chargers, solar, or garden lighting may require an upgrade.

What OJF will do?
Our engineers will first carry out a full EICR (Electrical installation
condition report) to confirm your existing wiring is safe and up to date
with modern electrical regulations. Once confirmed, we’ll install a RCBO consumer unit with surge protection.
- What is an RCBO? An RCBO continuously monitors each separate circuit and instantly disconnects the supply if a fault is detected, protecting people and property.
- What is surge protection? Surge protection devices (SPDs) safeguard your electrical system and appliances from voltage spikes caused by lightning, grid issues, or internal fluctuations.
Certificates
Certification proves the work is safe, compliant, and protects you if you sell or rent the property. Once the EICR is satisfactory and the fuseboard has been installed the installation will be signed off by OJF where you will receive an electrical installation certificate (EIC) and a building regulation compliance certificate.
These certificates are issued promptly after completion and supplied digitally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to upgrade my fuse board?
If your fuse board is outdated, it may not provide adequate protection against electric shock, fire, or electrical faults. Older consumer units
often lack modern safety devices designed to disconnect the power instantly if a dangerous fault occurs. Upgrading to a modern fuse board.
How long does a fuse board upgrade take?
Most fuse board installations are completed within one working day, depending on the condition of the existing wiring and the number of circuits.
Will the power be off during the installation?
Yes. The electricity supply will be isolated during the works. We’ll always aim to keep downtime to a minimum and advise you in advance.
Why does my property need to be tested before a fuse board upgrade?
Modern fuse boards use highly sensitive safety devices that can immediately disconnect the power if a fault is detected. Testing allows us to identify any existing issues with the wiring before installation, ensuring the new fuse board operates correctly and safely. This process helps prevent nuisance tripping or safety risks once the upgrade is complete.
Can an old fuse board be dangerous even if it still works?
Yes. Older fuse boards may still supply power but often lack modern protection against electric shock and electrical fires, meaning faults may go undetected.
Do you replace the fuse board if faults are found?
If testing identifies issues, we’ll explain what needs to be addressed before the new fuse board can be installed, ensuring the system is safe and compliant.
